Preamble: The invited talk offers a brainstorming session at the Pakistan Academy of Sciences for the young physics students, scientists & academicians to learn and discuss the mesmerizing phenomenon of particles at the quantum level. Quantum physics, the captivating science of the infinitesimally small, redefines our understanding of the Cosmos. At the quantum level, particles exhibit dual natures, occupying multiple states. Entanglement, a phenomenon linking particles instantaneously regardless of distance, challenges spatial boundaries. Probability, not certainty, governs the behaviour of these elusive entities, introducing a fundamental uncertainty. Quantum mechanics, with its wave-particle duality and entangled states, paints a reality where observation intertwines with the very fabric of existence. In this subatomic ballet, the mysteries of quantum physics beckon, inviting exploration into the profound nature of reality.
About the Speaker: Prof. Dr. Muhammad Suhail Zubairy (HI, SI, FPAS) is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Texas A&M University and is the inaugural holder of the Munnerlyn-Heep Chair in Quantum Optics. He has made pioneering contributions in the fields of Quantum computing, laser physics and quantum optics and has authored and co-authored several books and over 300 research papers on a wide variety of research problems relating to theoretical physics. His research work has been widely recognized by the physics community worldwide. Prof. Zubairy has received several prestigious awards and honours such as: (i) Changjiang Distinguished Chair Professor, Changjiang Distinguished Chair at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China (2017). This is the highest award of the Chinese Government to a university professor and is rarely given to a non-Chinese; (ii) Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics (2014); (iii) George H. W. Bush Award for Excellence in International Research (2011); (iv) Humboldt Senior Scientist Research Award (2007); (v) Khwarizmi International Award by the President of Iran (2001); (vi) Hilal-e-Imtiaz Award by the Government of Pakistan (2000); (vii) Outstanding Physicist Award from Organization of Islamic Countries (1999); (viii) Sitara-i-Imtiaz Award by the Government of Pakistan (1993); (ix) Gold Medal, Pakistan Academy of Sciences (1989), (x) Abdus Salam Prize for Physics (1986), and many more. Prof. Sohail Zubairy is also an elected Fellow of the following Societies: (i) American Physical Society (2006); (ii) Pakistan Academy of Sciences (1995); and (iii) Optical Society of America (1988).
